Before you dig into your pockets and make a donation that saves the life of a puppy or kitten, you’d better think twice. Do you really know where your money is going? If you happen to be supporting the Norfolk, Virginia based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) there are a few things you might need to know.

Did you know:

  1. From July 1998 to the end of 2005, PeTA has been responsible for the intentional deaths of 14,400 dogs, cats and “companion animals” due to euthanasia. That’s more than five animals a day.
  2. In 2005 alone, 90% of the animals brought in by the public to be re-homed were in fact killed. That is a far higher percentage than other smaller, less funded shelters in the area.
  3. PeTA has a relationship with a local crematorium which accepts nearly one ton of animals to be cremated each month.
  4. PeTA targets its “advertisements” toward children and its employees often hang out around elementary schools and hand out flyers with such titles as “Your Mommy Kills Animals”
  5. PeTA repeatedly attacks such organizations as The March of Dimes, the Pediatric AIDS foundation, and American Cancer Society because they support animal based research. President of PeTA, Ingrid Newkirk even has gone so far as to say that “if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we would be against it.”
